Tafoxiparin - Dystocia/Protracted Labor
Methods and products that normalize time for delivery are in high demand in the clinic. Tafoxiparin is presently being documented for the treatment and prevention of prolonged labor. This compound is similar to commercially available Low Molecular Weight Heparins, with the essential difference that it has no anticoagulative effect. In addition to normalizing prolonged labor, tafoxiparin is expected to limit the numbers of acute cesarean sections and the use of vacuum extraction.
Mechanism of action
Tafoxiparin has a dual mechanism of action. As extensively demonstrated in preclinical studies the drug (i) promotes the myometrial contractility of the uterus and (ii) enhances the softening of the cervix.
In addition, it acts synergistically with oxytocin and, as might be inferred from the clinical experience with dalteparin (Fragmin®), also with Prostaglandin E2. Both substances are endogenous and are commonly administered to women in association with parturition.
